British and Irish Pubs in San Diego
In San Diego, Irish and British pubs have faithful clientele that keep the ales flowing.
Many pubs are located all around San Diego County and a number of them are still located in neighborhoods, not commercial centers. One thing you might notice is that there are many more Irish pubs in San Diego than British ones. This is because, historically, there have been more Irish folks than Brits in San Diego.

Pubs are a great place to socialize with locals and to have some good
'chips' to go along with your pint. Pubs usually feature plenty of booths, most have a dart board and all of them usually carry live televised soccer and rugby matches. And best of all, just about all of these pubs are local proprietors, not corporations.

Our Favorite British Pubs
Shakespeare Pub & Grill (3701 India Street) - Since 1990, Shakespeare has been serving great chips and ales. This Middletown pub was started by two people who used to work at the Princess Pub in Littlie Italy and it has been a hit since Day 1. We really like the ambience at Shakespeare whether it is outside on their large deck or inside in the cozy pub. Parking is available in the pub's small lot but there is usually plenty of metered parking around it. If it is a beautiful sunny day, head over to Shakespeare. You won't be disappointed.

Princess Pub (1665 India Street) - Located in Little Italy, the Princess attracts a steady clientele of downtown denizens and tourists equally. The Princess has occupied the same corner of Little Italy since 1984. Outside and indoor seating are available and plenty of metered parking is available around the pub.

Hamilton's Tavern (1521 30th Street) - Located in the up and coming area called South Park, Hamilton's Tavern is just the ticket to enjoy a cold beer on a very hot day. This alehouse defies classification so thus the inclusion in this British pubs classification.
Don't be put off by the darkness of the bar because the lightness comes from the attentive staff and the clientele who are very friendly. A cafe operates on the premises so don't worry about going hungry. This tavern's 25-tap beer selection ranges from Belgian to British to San Diegan. They also have an extensive collection of bottled beers. Hamilton's is good enough to let you know the style of beer and its alcohol content. This is a very helpful thing so you don't get too snockered without knowing it when you take that first sip!

Our Favorite Irish Pubs
The Ould Sod (3373 Adams Avenue) - Ahhh, the Ould Sod. What a great little place to go have some masterfully poured Guinness. This small and quaint bar is located in Normal Heights and is a great neighborhood pub. Somehow, they are able to accommodate live music acts in their small pub. What we want to convey is that this place is the real deal. Trust us.

Rosie O'Grady's (3402 Adams Avenue) - Located just up (east) the street from The Ould Sod, Rosie O'Grady's offers its patrons a bit more elbow room. This hot spot in Normal Heights attracts a wide range of folks who are not necessarily here because it is an Irish pub but because it is a fun bar to meet friends. Rosie's also has a sister wine bar called Proprieters Reserve in case you want to have wine tonight instead of beer and cocktails.

The Field (544 Fifth Avenue) - Located in Downtown's Gaslamp Quarter, the Field is one of several Irish pubs located within close proximity of each other. The Field is known for its beautiful and unique decor that was shipped over directly from Ireland. If you think the place looks old, you are right, it is. The other interesting bit about The Field is that we heard that it is a Guinness company pub. Whatever the case, The Field has been a hit. It is a very popular pub and attracts many folks who party in the Gaslamp. For more information: (619) 232-9840
O'Brien's Pub (4646 Convoy Street) - This is more than just a pub - it is a gathering spot for serious beer aficionados. The owner of O'Brien's is always planning special events focused around his favorite subject, good beer. This pub is located in an Asian strip mall which makes the place even more of an anomaly in San Diego. The pub has both inside and outside seating as well as a dart range. O'Brien's serves beer from all around the world and always features a wide range of locally brewed ales. Again, the emphasis is on good beer. For more information: (858) 715-1745
