30 Year Locals Favorite-Sanfilippo's

Sanfilippo's-Hillcrest (3515 5th Avenue, San Diego 619-299-6080)

For over 30 years, Sanfilippo's in Hillcrest, has been filling the boots of locals. Same place. Same food. The business has stayed within the family over the decades. Those of us who love it have kept them going strong.

Sanfilippo's is a neighborhood place with hugs and handshakes going around as customers enter the doors. It is a throwback family-style Italian restaurant with a simple interior and red-and-white-checked tablecloths. In the back of the restaurant is the secret covered patio where, especially in spring and summer, you can sit outside below the seasonal gigantic zucchini growing overhead. There's nothing fancy about Sanfilippo's. There doesn't have to be. The food makes this place, the locals fill it.

Sanfilippo's is known for the casseroles that come to the table almost too hot to handle. But, as hot as they come, they quickly go disappear. They are delicious and unique to Sanfilippo's. The pizza is made with a thick crust, but it can be made with a thin crust, if you ask. The restaurant carries the typical old-school Italian food: ravioli, spaghetti, lasagna, etc. Most importantly, the sauce is made daily. Everything is fresh. Simple. Good.

Joe, the owner, told us that Sanfilippo's regulars tend not to read the menu. We're as guilty as the next regular! For 30-somethin' years, regulars have just been popping in for our favorite dishes, time and again. Maybe you will find a dish that you love and will just keep on ordering again and again.

Sanfilippo's is in our 'hood. What many of us know is that SanFilippo's might not be around much longer, at least, in this spot. 'Progress' is coming and it is threatening this old establishment that has fed generations of San Diegans. If you are in the neighborhood, grab a chair and support this local treasure. You'll leave full and happy.

Buon Appetito!
