Tip of the Week: August 23, 2008

Q: Why do seagulls fly over the sea?
A: Because if they flew over the bay they would be bagels.

All things being relative, we have found a hole-y experience. We found a place that you can spread out your newspaper, get a bite to eat, fill your cupeth with coffee, be by the water and greet the morning sun away from the ant trail of people that swarm the local beach eateries.

Who doesn't like the romantic notion of going out for breakfast by the waterfront? Actually, getting out to do it is a different matter. Still, you roll out of bed and head out only to find one of those less than desirable restaurants. All dressed up in flip-flops and shorts and you end up at one of those places that are magnets for seagulls, fish bait and ick.

We've got a casual spot that has dependable food, but it isn't fancy-schmancy. In the restaurant biz, they always say "location, location, location." This place has the location. Inexpensive and simple food plus

great digs. You'd have to know about this one. The Hyatt Regency (formerly Hyatt Islandia) in Quivira Basin at Mission Bay has made some neat improvements. What used to be a building for sportfishing is now a building that houses an Einstein's Bros. Bagels, a mini-mart, and the original sportfishing business. The Einstein's store is not your typical Einstein's as it has a more limited menu, but again, you can't beat the location.

The interior of Einstein's is clean, fresh and new. The outside deck surrounding the building is the prize. You can grab a dependable breakfast or lunch, have lox on the docks, and just relax.

Einstein's opens up at the crack o' dawn, so if you want to catch the sun coming up over the water, this is your spot. Doors open at 5am. You can watch the sportfisherman start the day, or just track the ebbs and flows of the boating activities throughout the day.

Finding a place to fill one's boots with good carbohydrates isn't easy along the bay or harbor. Finding a place that is still a secret: priceless.

After you have your bagel and eat it, too, you can walk along the rest of the walkway to check out the linear park that parallels the waterfront.

Getting there is easy:
Take I-8 west to the WEST MISSION BAY DRIVE exit to the right. Travel on INGRAHAM STREET just a bit and you'll see the exit for WEST MISSION BAY DRIVE on your right. Look for QUIVIRA ROAD, get in the right lane of the two left turn lanes. Make the left and then an immediate right on Quivira Road, then another immediate left into the driveway for the Hyatt's parking lot. Parking is free. Look for the Hyatt hotel building called The Suites. If you follow these directions, you should be in the parking lot directly in front of the building. It has an uninspired trellis over the main doorway. Walk through to the other side and out to the walkway. Turn left to find Einstein's.

One more:
Q:How does a bagel protect itself?
A: It puts on locks. We'll stop with the bad jokes.
