Where the turf meets the surf
down at old Del Mar
take a plane
take a train
take a car.
There is a smile on every face
and a winner in each race
where the turf meets the surf
at Del Mar.
The Del Mar Race track , opened in 1937, was the mecca for Hollywoood back in the early days. Bing Crosby and Pat O'Brien were practically residents of the racetrack. Crosby was very instrumental in bringing those contracted at Paramount Studios to Del Mar. Back in the day, Jimmy Durante played piano (and has a street named after him), and Pat O'Brien was on the original Board of Directors.
Stars like Betty Grable, Harry James, Dorothy Lamour, W. C. Fields, Paulette Goddard, Edgar Bergen, June Haver, Ann Miller, Don Ameche, Ava Gardner, Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, George Jessel, Mickey Rooney, and Red Skelton came to Del Mar each year. Many would stay at Bing Crosby's San Diego ranch. Rumor has it that Bob Hope and Bing Crosby got the idea of their road-trip movies from sitting up in the Turf Club at the track. Hollywood gave shimmer and shine to Del Mar. Hollywood made Del Mar famous.
Call to Post: Trumpet Fanfare- Click Here! The years have passed and the stars have faded away. Regardless, Del Mar still is a great experience in a beautiful setting. The cheering of the crowd during each race heightens the excitement whether you bet on a horse or don't. Your surest bet at Del Mar is that there isn't another track like it in the world.
