Eat Big at the Groovy Big Kitchen in San Diego
Tip of the Week: July 12, 2008
There's no better place in the world for meat, conversation
and good old-fashioned friendship." -- Whoopi Goldberg
(Was she talking about this "TIP"?)
Where can you go to eat in San Diego, open the door, and
enter into a time warp back to Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco
circa 1960's-1970's? Where can you go for that unforgettable
Bohemian groovy kind of place?
There's only one place, but you'll have to have a car to get
there. Well, that's not entirely true. We overheard a woman
tell a waiter once "I just flew in from New York City and told
the cabbie at the airport that I wanted to go straight to this
place." Well, it is that kind of place. It doesn't have to advertise
because the locals spread the love. It is the kind of place you
can roll out of bed and head to for breakfast. You won't be alone.
Hey, you don't have to listen to us. You could listen to Zagat or
Rachel Ray or even Bon Appetit Magazine. Let's be honest.
We're hip and more fun!
The Big Kitchen is actually not big. You can feel the place
hug you when you walk in. This is the place for that tie-dye shirt
you have tucked away in the closet or attic. We can talk about the
great home-style food. We can talk about the large portions. We should
talk about the prices always being fair. That's just the way Judy
wants it. TV's Rachel Ray even got out there for under $9. But,
the Big Kitchen is more than food.
When you walk into the Big Kitchen you feel it. You'll know the owner,
Judy Foreman, when she walks through the kitchen. You quickly
know that this is her place. No, really. This place defines the woman, her
passions, interests, politics, and heart. If there is anyone who embodies
the 60's and what it stood for- it is Judy. She is one-of-a-kind and a
local treasure.
Tip:
Don't expect to be able to engage in the "meaning of life" conversations
with your friend(s) at the Big Kitchen. Oh, you can try.
We can assure you that you will be distracted by what you'll see in every square inch of the place: music memorabilia, artwork, cartoons, postcards, photos of visiting customers and celebrities, trinkets of pop culture
and the ever-present political propaganda. The question is: what
isn't on those walls? Oooh those walls can talk!
You can bet your sweet bippy that the Big Kitchen is an experience.
Ask Whoopi Goldberg, she worked as dishwasher in that kitchen
back in 1981 before she hit the big time. As Judy says, "Trés Bien!"
