Tip of the Week: October 27, 2007

San Diego's Hillcrest/Banker's Hill area is home to some special structures.

Tip: Don't cross the bridge until you get to it.

If you mostly roll by car, then you miss out on some of the foot bridges that link the community. We have what we call the "Five Bridges Walk" which takes you over each bridge and gives you a taste of that urban adventure with a splash of history.

This walk won't kill ya. You can take it slow and even stop in Balboa Park or if you don't have acrophobia (fear of heights) or geyphyrophobia (fear of bridges), you might sit on the Spruce Street Bridge and feel the love.

Five Bridges Walk:
Start at the Laurel Bridge at 6th Avenue. Walk across one side, walk back the other and continue west to 1st Avenue. Right turn on 1st Avenue to 1st Avenue Bridge.

Continue north to Spruce. Left on Spruce to Front. Bridge is visible. Head back east on Spruce to 1st. Head south (right) to Quince. Make a left on Quince so that you are heading east. Follow to white wooden Quince foot bridge.

Walk across the bridge due east on Quince to 6th Avenue. Make a left on 6th Avenue to Upas. Turn right into the park.
Follow Upas into the park down the slight decline toward the picnic tables and towering trees. Follow cement walkway as it drops behind the picnic tables and winds down into the canyon.

CAUTION:
This trail has some kick to it and might have you a little winded. You will get winded. Walk across the bridge and turn back up toward the picnic tables/park. At the top of the hill traverse the grass to the left and head south (left) back toward 6th and Laurel.

If you continue, for a full loop, you can continue straight on that path up and down the "camel's back" hill. It will take you (and your breath) up to and beyond the Boy Scout/Girl Scout camps.

Continue walking to Park Blvd, follow the sidewalk around Roosevelt Jr. High, past the San Diego Zoo on a straight line until you pass Spanish Village, the giant Moreyton Bay Fig tree, and finally the center walkway of Balboa Park-- Laurel Street. Then, turn right on that center walkway and follow it back out to 6th Avenue.
