It is in the American Southwest that things got a bit more Tex-Mex with the addition of grated cheese, black olives, and sour cream. Freshly made salsa and tortillas as well as grilled meats are preferred in Mexico. San Diego has its share of healthy and delicious Mexican fare and many feature vegetarian options. Here's a tip: go get your healthy Mexican food at these three locations in Normal Heights, North Park, and Ocean Beach.

Cantina Mayahuel (2934 Adams Avenue, Normal Heights 619-283-6292)- Adams Avenue is known for its antique shops and a couple of local eateries that have quite the following. Cantina Mayahuel, located at 30th and Adams Avenue, has been in business for more than a year now but word still hasn't gone out beyond the area.

Drive too fast on Adams and you'll miss it. Cantina Mayahuel is making a name for itself for its unusual mexican cuisine. What makes it special is the freshness of the food, the authentic decor and preparation. If you like molé, they grind it fresh at this place. Where else do you see that? However, it is only served on certain days of the week. The molé special is a large meal with black beans, rice and tortillas Caesar salad? Yep, done the real way as it was originally created in Tijuana. The tacos are fresh, big, different and inexpensive. In fact, nothing is over $11.00 for the most part. Beer and wine are both served. As a treat, they also sell Coca-Cola from Mexico and they make homemade Aguas De Frutas, or fruit drinks

The restaurant has indoor seating (8-10 tables) and patio seating. It also has an indoor bar for dining or drinking. This is the ONLY Mexican food restaurant, that we know of, that actually uses authentic mexican clay plates. The owner, an artist, has given the place a neat feel and ambiance. Lunch time is quiet but evenings do get crowded. The restaurant has limited parking in the back as well as street parking (parking meters). It is one block west of Antique Row Cafe. It is open Noon to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; closed Monday.

Note: Cantina Mayahuel is not your ordinary San Diego Mexican food restaurant. Don't expect quesadillas and burritos. If you want to try a different version of mexican food and presentation, try Cantina Mayahuel. Don't expect flair, expect a different and delicious experience, simply done.

Rancho's Cocina (1830 Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, Ocean Beach & 3910 30th Street, North Park)- Rancho's has consistently set itself apart from the competition by serving healthy variations of Mexican classics. This is a great place for vegetarians and carnivores alike. Rancho's offers delicious Mexican breakfast items so if you are in the mood for Mexican food in the morning, look no further than Rancho's Cocina.

Rancho's is not afraid to offer its patrons dishes that are not in the mainstream. Different types of vegetables and even mushrooms make their way into the dishes here at Rancho's and we appreciate that. The food is delicious and the setting is charming. Indoor and outdoor seating is available at both locations and service is terrific. Beer and wine are offered.
