Tip of the Week: May 19, 2007

With National Maritime Day on May 22nd, we want to honor the work of San Diego's Working Waterfront.

The Port of San Diego offers free tours of the Working Waterfront at various times per year. The two-hour bus tour (no walking involved) gives a bird's eye behind-the-scenes view of the inner-workings of Port activity-activity that we don't actually see on a day-to-day basis and take for granted. The tour changes slightly each time depending on Port activity on any given day.

The working waterfront contributes $7.6 billion to the San Diego economy and over 42,000 jobs. The Port and its maritime tenants move an incredible amount of goods through this successful niche Port annually. The Port is one of nine 'strategic ports' for the U.S and national defense needs. One in every 10 imported cars (400,000) in the US comes through San Diego. Every Dole banana west of the Rockies comes through the Port of San Diego, and over 200 cruise ships make stops in San Diego.

The Port of San Diego isn't the biggest port. It has, however, carved out a niche that it can serve and serve mightily. Business is up nearly 30% since 2005. So, when you drive along the harbor, tip your hat to the men and women who move all the cargo that we use here and throughout the United States.
