"Public art is art that is exposed in a public space, either an outdoor location or in a publicly accessible building." If you are into public art, head to the airport.

Most of Lindbergh Field's (San Diego International Airport) public art can be mostly be seen in the newer section of the Airport, Terminal 2. The pieces are large, colorful, and are meant to provide visitors with a little distraction during the inevitable waiting period between flights.

Unfortunately, Terminal 1 does not have the space or the high ceilings, so it cannot feature the same amount of public art. Truth be told, the only piece of art in Terminal 1 is the City of San Diego Mayor's photo welcoming you as you head down the escalators from Southwest Airline's Terminals! There are some rocking chairs, so go ahead and have a seat and do some people-watching as you wait for your connection.

In 1998, the airport completed what is now referred to as Terminal 2 West. At that time, the San Diego Unified Port District governed the facilities and commissioned several permanent pieces of traditional and contemporary works by local and nationally renowned artists.

There are currently four unique areas comprised of 24 exhibition cases located in the Commuter Terminal and throughout Terminal 2. This program provides opportunities to showcase San Diego's unique identity through the presentation of items that have cultural, educational and artistic interest.

Here is a listing of the current and permanent public art pieces and exhibitions on display in the airport:
