San Diego Birch Aquarium
The Birch Aquarium gives the public an inside view on marine life in San Diego.
A number of San Diego's tourist attractions are located on or near the water. One of the best places to sight see is the Birch Aquarium. Birch Aquarium at Scripps (2300 Expedition Way, La Jolla Shores)
San Diego's only aquarium is operated by the University of California, San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO). The aquarium is situated on a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the SIO's pier. The best part about the aquarium is the view from the behind the museum that looks out onto the ocean. It is literally breathtaking. Be sure to step out onto the beautiful terrace that allows visitors to breathe deep and take in the natural beauty and vastness of the Pacific Ocean.

The Birch Aquarium was developed to educate patrons about the different varieties of ocean species that dwell in the area but it also provides a good glimpse into how the oceanographers and marine biologists do their important research. One wing of the building is dedicated to the aquarium and the other wing is dedicated to the interactive scientific exhibits. Like any good aquarium, the Birch delivers on its large exhibit space and attention to education and regional interest. It is a very impressive facility and one thing we like so much about it is that they do their best to encourage their patrons to interact with some of the exhibits. A tip: If you can stomach seeing sharks and other fish in the big shark tank eat their meals, arrive in time to see the Scripps Institute of Oceanography's researchers dive in and feed the sharks at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. We like that there is always something special going on at the Birch Aquarium. Please check their website for the latest information, hours, admission, and directions.
