San Diego Farmers Markets
Every day of the week, except Mondays, farmers markets set up shop all around San Diego County. Before the first farmers market came to Hillcrest, most city dwellers purchased farm fresh produce from roadside stands in the rural parts of San Diego. Beginning with Hillcrest and then expanding to other neighborhoods, San Diego county's farmers markets brought local farmers to the city dwellers. This farm to consumer approach means more consistent sales for the farmers and fresher produce for the city folk.

Some of San Diego's farmers markets operate in the morning and some operate in the afternoon. All operate rain or shine. All the markets feature farm fresh produce from local farms, as well as prepared foods and handicrafts from local vendors. Most of the farmers markets also feature live entertainment and plenty of people watching and food sampling.
If you are visiting San Diego, stopping by one of these farmers markets is a great way to take in the local culture and food. If you are coming for a convention or are coming to visit San Diego, purchase some fresh flowers to brighten up your hotel room?

Most of the farmers markets usually have a charitable side to them as well. For example, the farmers market in Hillcrest donates a portion of the proceeds to their local Hillcrest Business Improvement Association and the La Jolla Farmers Market donates a portion of its proceeds to the La Jolla Elementary School. Local communities help support the survival of these farmers markets. If people do not support them, the farmers markets will go away. Unfortunately, this has happened in Mission Valley and other parts of San Diego. When you are wondering what to do in San Diego, check our list and see which farmers market is near you.

TIP: Most farmers only deal in cash while some of the vendors may accept credit cards. Be sure to bring small bills with you to make it easier on the farmers when they make change. You might also want bring a canvas bag or a large basket to make your farmers market haul a little easier on your back and on the planet.
