San Diego International Airport
San Diego International Airport (SAN) is located a mere 5 minutes away from downtown San Diego.
Valet parking is available at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. The cost for valet parking is $30 per day plus tip. Some believe that the extra cost is worth it when they don't want to bother with the hassle of self- parking at one of the six lots run by the Airport Authority. Self-parkng rates range from $10 (off-site) to $24 (on-site) per day.
It is a very convenient airport for San Diegans and various attempts to move it have failed every time. In fact, another effort failed during the November 2006 election. The ballot measure Prop A sought to get support to consider Miramar Air Station (Marines)as a replacement airport.

Though very convenient, the airport is considered too small for a region of its size. According to the Regional Airport Authority, 15 million passengers travel in and out of Lindbergh Field (locals use this term in addition to "The Airport").With all the studies (too numerous to count) and all the years (30) that have passed, the airport remains in a fantastic location. You can best believe that the fight is over the real estate of this airport location. Smack dab in the center of it all.

San Diego's runway is notoriously short. Flying into San Diego- from YouTube
Surprisingly, not only is the runway short, it is the ONLY runway, Yes, San Diego's airport has just ONE runway. If you are flying in for the first time, do not be alarmed when you look to your right and see Balboa Park and look to your left and see downtown. This is perfectly normal. The advantage of having a short runway is that the plane literally lands and makes a left into one of the three (3) terminals! It can be quite alarming to those visitors expecting a typical modern airport on the outskirts of a large metropolitan area! Sometimes, planes do have to "abort" a landing because the approach might not be quite on target. If this happens, do not fear, it happens occasionally.

Ground Transportation
Car rental companies are located a free shuttle ride away from Lindbergh Field. Each rental company has their own shuttle buses so be sure to look for your rental company's shuttle and they will take you to the lot.
Taxis are plentiful and queue up to take arriving passengers off to their destinations. All you have to do is walk outside to the designated area (follow the signs saying taxi) and tell the dispatcher that you need a taxi. Cabbies are required to treat you well. If they don't, report it. Public transportation is available in the form of a special bus that transports passengers to the downtown area for a mere $2.25 (exact change). It comes on a fairly frequent basis and is a good option if you plan to stay in or near downtown.
