We get a kick out of this annual fall tradition and can attest to the fun and frivolity that come with most of the Oktoberfests in San Diego. Of course, the original Oktoberfest started over 200 years ago in Germany and the taps haven't stopped pouring since then. Oktoberfest is now recognized as the "Largest Volksfest (People's Fair) in the World" - Wikipedia.

Here in San Diego, thousands of volks/folks attend the various Oktoberfest celebrations in San Diego and join in all the merriment. It's also a great way for German Americans to strut their stuff and try to teach us all the Chicken Dance.

One thing we've noticed is that Oktoberfests aren't confined to the month of October any more - some actually start in late September. Maybe this is a way to schedule an event and not conflict with the other cities' Oktoberfests.

Whatever the case, it's a fun way to bring in the autumn season in San Diego. Prost!

San Diego Oktoberfest Celebrations in 2012 Please note: We strongly encourage our readers to check the event websites to get the latest information.

The 17th Annual Encinitas Chamber of Commerce Oktoberfest will be held on Sunday, September 23, 2012 and will run from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. along a six-block marketplace at Mountain Vista Drive and El Camino Real. A ceremonial parade is scheduled for Noon.

The most German of the Oktoberfests in San Diego is organized by the German American Societies of San Diego and it takes place at 1017 S. Mollison Avenue on two weekends, September 28th-30th & October 5th-7th, 2012.

The hours vary every day so please consult their website.

Many San Diegans think that the La Mesa Oktoberfest is THE only game in town because it brings people from all over the region via car, bus, and trolley. It doesn't hurt that the City of La Mesa rolls out the barrels in order to spur tourism.

This popular event takes place from October 5th-7th, 2012 in downtown La Mesa on La Mesa Boulevard between Acacia and 4th Avenue. The hours vary every day so please consult the schedule.

Parking is at a premium and many folks take the San Diego Trolley to get there.

The Carlsbad Rotary's Oktoberfest is scheduled for Saturday, October 6th, 2012 from 12:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at a local park called Holiday Park. Holiday Park is located between Tamarack Avenue and Carlsbad Village Drive off the I-5 Freeway. Please note that this event is not as large as the La Mesa & El Cajon Oktoberfests. However, if you're in the North County and don't want to drive a long way, this Oktoberfest is right up your alley.

Another North County Oktoberfest takes place on October 7th, 2012 from Noon to 4:00 p.m. which puts this event as the quickest Oktoberfest in San Diego county. The event takes place at the historic Olivenhain Meeting Hall, 432 Rancho Santa Fe Road.

No one can dispute that Ocean Beach does everything differently. This is the undisputed party-hearty Oktoberfest that draws in people from as far as Pacific Beach. This is not your grandpa's Oktoberfest. This event goes from October 12th-13th, 2012 all along Newport Avenue.

The hours vary every day so please consult the schedule.

A favorite autumn ritual of San Diegans is to head for the hills of Julian to go take in a scenic drive, pick apples, and have some apple pie. Here's another reason to go east to Julian - Oktoberfest! If you've been itching to take a day trip and take advantage of some lovely fall weather then, by all means, please head out to this lovely mountain town from October 13th-14th, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The event takes place at the Rabobank parking lot which is on the main drag of Julian at 2033 Main Street.
