San Diego Rosicrucian Headquarters
Tip of the Week: December 6, 2008
We're all guilty of it. Driving while thinking. Hell-bent to get where we are going and never give a second thought to that weird or odd place we drive by daily. Too busy. Some other time. Whatever.
The folks in San Diego's North County have no doubt seen this structure looming from the hillside. Some have driven by the run-down property and never thought twice about it.
Sounded like an assignment for us. We did the dirty work. Someone had to. For a long time, we've wondered about this place up in Oceanside. And, after two visits, we now can confirm it is still odd....and a mystery.
Look, we know that you might not ever go and check out this odd find. Still, we want to shine a light on all corners of San Diego County. It can be interesting just to know what is in our midst and in this case, in our midst for over one century. Besides, at this time of year, who has time for adventure?
The Rosicrucian Fellowship Headquarters is the site of a sect of
Christian Mystics, founded in 1909. It is considered Esoteric Christianity. In their words, "it was created for the purpose of promolgating a definite, logical, and sequential teaching concerning the origin, evolution, and future development of the World and Man, showing both the spiritual and scientific aspects, and allowing for a union of Science and Religion." Esoteric enough, but they've been holding the candle for this philosphy for 100 years.
The Rosicrucian property has a ghost-town feel. We think that the largest building looks as if it was once a sanitarium.
There's a creep factor here to the extent that we'll place this "Tip" in our "Odd San Diego" section of our website. The Rosicrucians are asked to ponder their own existence and beliefs. The property is open to the public. Funding for the Rosicrucians is based on voluntary financial contributions. All students of the philosophy can study at no-cost.
The property has walking paths, a rose garden, the quiet Ecclesia Healing
Temple standing in solitiude, and buildings that look all, but closed. However, the property still serves ardent followers of this order of Rosicrucians. If you think that you'll never go, take a look by clicking here.
Most of us probably never knew that the Rosicrucian Fellowship existed let alone has followers worldwide. Driving on the property you wouldn't get that feeling either. Nevertheless, it is on the National Registry of Historic Places.
If you feel like having a religious-kind of day, you can take the 5 minute drive to Mission San Luis Rey from the Rosicrucian Fellowship and have a look around at another long-standing religious compound. Long-standing is an understatement. The Mission has been standing there since 1798.
