The U.S. military brings in $13 billion annually into the San Diego economy. The Navy has designated San Diego Bay as a West Coast 'megaport'. In fact, one third of the U.S. Naval Pacific Fleet calls San Diego Bay home port.

You can see why San Diego has always saluted the men and women of the armed services not only for their service, but because they have been part of the greater San Diego family.

As large and commanding as the Navy is in the San Diego culture, we can also find the quiet respect paid to those who have served this country.

Over by the G Street Mole at Tuna Harbor, on Harbor Drive, just to the south of the USS Midway Museum (#41), you can spend some time looking at the thoughtful and creative Veterans memorials.

The memorials are fittingly set against the backdrop of the harbor, the Midway, and connected to one another by proximity.

Walk along the embarcadero just to the south of the USS Midway, and stop to look. There are six installations at the G Street Mole. Check them out: "Homecoming" sculpture, the "Aircraft Carrier Memorial" obelisk, the "Battle of Leyte Gulf" monument, and the USS San Diego (CL-53) Memorial. Take a look at the detail of the "Unconditional Love".

The Bob Hope Military Tribute- shows the diversity of the soldiers who, over five decades, listened to Bob as he entertained them. He entertained service men and woman serving in World War II through the Korean War, Vietnam War, Cold War, and the first Persian Gulf War. There are 16 larger-than-life sculptures representing those taking in Bob's performances over the years.
