Wine Steals (1243 University Avenue, Hillcrest) - We have been fans of Wine Steals since Day 1 of their opening. It was the first wine tasting establishment in our experience that catered to folks who wanted to know more about wine but were afraid to ask. Wine Steals' laid back atmosphere coupled with the assortment of cozy sofas and oversized chairs has invited many people to come off the street and settle in to enjoy a big glass of wine. Another reason we love Wine Steals is because they sell bottles of wine at competitive prices that you won't usually find at Trader Joe's and Costco. (619) 295-1188.

Wine Steals offers a very tempting way to increase people's wine education - every Saturday afternoon from 4pm-6:30pm, Wine Steals pours tastes from 25 bottles for a mere $10 - you can taste as much as you like in that 2-hour period. If you cannot make it on Saturday afternoons, visit Wine Steals during the week for their daily happy hour is from 4-6 pm and features selected red and white wines for $3/glass.

Wine Steals, Point Loma - (2970 Truxtun Rd., San Diego)- This location is a great historic building on the rim of the old Sail Ho golf course at the former Naval Training Center site, now called Liberty Station. For those of us who thought we'd be able to spread out and have room in the new place before crowds found out about it, we were wrong. Wine Steals-Pt. Loma opened true to form-packed. Still, it is a great, casual location with all the great elements that has made Wine Steals so successful. (619) 221-1959

Wine Steals, Cardiff - (1953 San Elijo Ave., Cardiff) - This location is in a modern building along the train tracks in Cardiff. This is the third location for this very successful business. Business model? Create an inviting, casual, inexpensive way to enjoy and learn about wine. Simple formula. Works like a charm. Wine Steals packs them in!(760) 230-2657

Wine Steals at Petco Park - open March 2010 - 793 and 795 J Street San Diego, CA

San Diego Wine Co. (7080 Miramar Road, Ste 100- San Diego) - Serious wine enthusiasts know about this hidden gem in a light industrial area just east of La Jolla. San Diego Wine Co. prides itself in its ability to find wines that will appeal to its broad base of customers. They are able to buy up shipments of wine for their savvy customers which translates into great prices on great wines. San Diego Wine Co. has never lost its warehouse look - what you see is what you get. When you first walk into the Wine Company, the first thing you will notice is that a good number of shoppers have shopping carts - this means that people stock up on wine after a visit to this place.

After years of having a cramped little wine tasting bar, the San Diego Wine Co. constructed a tasting room above the warehouse. It is a windowless room but it does offer tasters much more elbow room than the previous one. Wear comfortable shoes as all tasting is done standing up. The tasting takes place on Saturdays from 10-4:30pm and the price ranges from $7.00-$10.00 depending on the selection. Rest assured, their tastings are very educational and it is a very good way to taste good quality wines and then make some purchase downstairs in the warehouse.

The Wine Lover (3968 Fifth Avenue, Hillcrest) - This charming little spot was Hillcrest's first wine bar. It has withstood the test of time by keeping true to its mission of providing a classic wine tasting experience complete with flights and food pairings. Their location provides both romantic indoor and outdoor setting for its patrons.

The Grape (823 Fifth Avenue, Gaslamp) - The Grape is an oldie but goodie that has managed to withstand all the redevelopment and growth of the Gaslamp. Along with Croce's Restaurant & Bar located across the street, there aren't too many original Gaslamp establishments still around. The Grape has managed to hold its own since the late 1980's/early 90's. The Grape and The Wine Lover are the first 2 wine tasting bars in San Diego that actually made it and are still around today. Savor a sip at the very small Grape if you want to flee the hectic scene at the other bars in the Gaslamp.
