Can you find this place?

We have polled a number of our surfer friends and asked them for their opinion on the beaches that offer good surf on a consistent basis.

Ocean Beach/Sunset Cliffs - The surfers congregate at the end of Hill Street along Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. Surfers hike down with their boards to get to the beach that is ringed by high sandstone cliffs. Depending on the tide and the location of the swells, surfers usually have a long paddle out to get to their destination. A good number of surfers of all ages frequent this area and it is especially popular at lunch and after work!

La Jolla/Windansea - This surfing area is much more limited than Sunset Cliffs in terms of size and the barriers posed by the reefs that are located throughout the area. The local surfers know the location of the reefs but their Aloha Spirit has much to be desired. It is more local than the other beaches in this list and thus, more territorial so mind your manners

La Jolla/Scripps Pier - This beach is large enough to accommodate many surfers - including a number of them that come to surf after working or taking classes at UCSD. The Scripps Institution of Oceanography's working pier provides a nice backdrop to this beach and some surfers can be seen trying to slalom their way through the pier's pilings. It is a good beach in terms of direct access from the parking lot (metered) down the stairs to the beach.

Carlsbad State Beach/Carlsbad - This State of California Beach is located on the west side of the 101. Although there is a fee for parking (State Beaches charge fees), it does not preclude surfers from paddling out into the waves here. The waves are usually good and the beach's proximity to the 101 makes it an easy option for North County surfers. Plus, they can also look out the car window and see if the waves are any good.
