Weather by the Stats: WARNING: This is not exciting stuff for all people.
JANUARY:
January is usually the coldest month of the year in San Diego. The average min. temperature for the month is 49.7, the average max. temperature is 65.8 Daytime temps often reach 70 and occasionally 80.
San Diego can average of 7 days with rain. This is the wettest month of
the year. The sun shines 72 percent of the time.
FEBRUARY:
Longer days in February produce a slight rise in temperature over January. The monthly mean of 59. The average daily min. is 51.5 and the average daily max.is 66.3 In most years, the maximum temperature 70 or even 80. A freezing temperature has never been registered during the month at the
national weather service.
The mean rainfall for February is normally 2.04 inches. Sunshine averages 73 percent of the time.
MARCH:
Temperatures continue to climb in March and the monthly mean of 60. The average daily max. temperatureis 66.3 and the average daily min. temp. of 53.6 Occasionally, hot dry winds from the interior (desert) have caused temperatures to rise well into the 80s. The last time a maximum temperature of 90 or above occurred was on the March 29,2005, when the temperature soared to 91.
Still in the rainy season, March is normally the second wettest
month averaging 2.26 inches and 7 days with measurable amounts.
Sunshine is 70 percent of the time.
APRIL:
Temperatures continue to rise slowly through April with the monthly mean of 62.6 The average daily max. temperature 68.7 and the average daily minimum is 56.4 In some Aprils, there have been days
with hot, dry winds and temperatures well in excess of 80 degrees. On 11 such occurrences, 90 or higher has been recorded at the National Weather Service.
Showers rather than prolonged rains have been the rule. These have occurred on an average of 5 days during the month. Normal rainfall for the month is 0.75 inch.
As a rule, April ushers in the night and early morning low clouds so characteristic of our summer and fall months, but the percentage of sunshine is little affected by the cloudiness. Sunshine is about 66 percent of the time.
MAY (also known as "MAY GRAY"):
May is normally characterized by persistent overcast skies during the night and morning hours and by less sunshine than any other month except June. Temperatures continue their upward trend with the most noticeable rise in nighttime readings. The normal daily maximum for the month is 69.3 The normal daily minimum 59.8 and the mean 64.6. The cool sea breeze prevails nearly every day and temperatures above 80 degrees rarely have been reached. Nights are uniformly mild.
Our long dry season usually begins in May. Stormy weather is almost unknown during May.
Although skies are commonly overcast during the night and morning hours, heavy fog is rare. Possible sunshine is 58 percent on any given day.
May and June are the cloudiest months of the year which is a paradox because they are two of the 5
driest months of the year.
JUNE (also known as "JUNE GLOOM"):
Temperature in June continues the slow rise of preceding months
and the mean of 67.4. The daily maximum averages 72.2 and the daily minimum 62.6 degrees. Changes from day to day normally are small.
Well into the dry season, June averages only one day with measurable rain and a monthly average of 0.09 inch.
Thunderstorms will occasionally develop in the mountains and deserts with monsoonal
moisture.
June is normally the cloudiest month of the year with only 57 percent of possible sunshine due largely to the persistence of overcast skies during the morning hours.
JULY:
Night and morning cloudiness continues through July...bringing afternoons that are generally clear and bright. San Diego sits under the protective blanket of moist air from the pacific. The daily max. temperature rarely exceeds 85. The average daily max. temperature is 75.8 The daily minimum 65.9 degrees and the monthly mean 70.9 Hot...Humid weather is almost unknown and as a result thunderstorms rarely occur. July begins the thunderstorm season in the mountains and deserts.
The average sunshine is 68 percent of the time.
GLOBAL WARMING? San Diego had its hottest month in 25 years in July 2006 with soaring temperatures (90-100 degrees) and record (as well as unusual) humidity!
AUGUST:
August is normally our warmest month with the normal high of 77.8, the normal low 67.3 and the monthly normal of
72.6
Usually skies become clear by midmorning and as a result, sunshine is plentiful.
SEPTEMBER
It is easy to tell when San Diego is having those pesky Santa Ana winds. Look outside and the sky is clear, blue and the air is hot and dry. Dry easterly winds blow into the county from the eastern deserts.
known as Santa Anas. These are the hot desert winds that blow in and wreak havoc during fire season. Monthly averages have been changed little by the occasional hot days. The normal max. is only 77.1 The normal low 65.6 degrees and the monthly normal 71.4
Several days of dry weather and extremely low humidity prevail.
OCTOBER: October is the last of the dry months and is usually a transitional period with variable weather.
The normal daily max.temperature is 74 and the normal daily min. is 61.2 with a mean monthly
temperature of 67.6.
If at all, wet days usually occur late in the month as storm systems from the Pacific Northwest move farther south. The average rainfall is .44 inch. The greatest monthly total was 4.98 inches in 2004. In October 2001, San Diego did not receive any rain.
October has 68 percent sunshine. Dry weather prevails with the Santa Ana winds pushing temperatures into the 90s.
NOVEMBER:
November has a normal max. temperature of 70 and an average minimum of 53.6 It also shows a noticeable cooling trend and the mean temperature of 61.8 is 5.8 The dry easterly winds decrease during the month. As a rule, temperatures seldom have gone above 80 or below 40.
Precipitation increases with the monthly average becoming 1.07 inches. Regardless of the fact that there have been several years with no rainfall, the rainy season may be said to begin during November.
More sunshine can be expected in November than any other month. Still, San Diego receives 74 percent sunshine.
DECEMBER:
The San Diego winter, generally, begins about the middle of December. Even then temperatures are moderate, the daily high averaging 66.3, the normal low 48.9 and the mean 57.6
The normal rainfall increases to 1.31 inches.
Average sunshine remains close to 73 percent of the time.
