Tip of the Week: May 3, 2008

On the long list of where to catch some great views of San Diego, one special place is missing.

The USS Midway Museum has opened the forward part of the flight deck for public access. Climb up the stairs and get the unique experience of being up on the aircraft carrier with a grand view of the harbor and the ocean air filling up your lungs. And guess what? It is free.

Sure, we'd love everyone to support the great work of the volunteers who created the USS Midway Museum and got her to be permanently docked in San Diego harbor for all to admire. But, c'mon getting up on the flight deck for free would make anyone happy. Okay, we admit it, we're easy.

Now, we could stop there and just tell you about the Midway, but we're 'givers', so we'll throw you another herring. The Midway is hard to miss. The entrance to the Midway parking lot (and to gain access) is just south of Broadway on Harbor Drive. You can see the Midway from the Broadway Pier. Park in the Midway lot for $7 for 4 hours. We think that's a fair price, especially for downtown.

After you've check out the Midway, walk along Harbor Drive on the southern side of the Midway. Along G-Street Mole (odd name, but you'll remember it), you'll find some of San Diego's Veteran memorials including: the Bob Hope Military Tribute and "Unconditional Surrender" .. read more...

Once you're out there along the water, you'll probably want to stay. Great excuse to eat, right? So, waddle over to the outside deck of the Fish Market before the masses descend upon it and enjoy a bite to eat on the harbor. Salud and salute!
