Birch Aquarium at Scripps (2300 Expedition Way, La Jolla)- Located in La Jolla Shores, the Birch Aquarium has one of the best views of the ocean from its tide pool petting terrace. Like any good aquarium, the Birch delivers on its large exhibit space and attention to education and regional interest. It is a very impressive facility and one thing we like so much about it is that they do their best to encourage their patrons to interact with some of the exhibits.
Open daily from 9am - 5pm
A tip: If you can stomach seeing sharks and other fish in the big shark tank eat their meals, arrive in time to see the Scripps Institute of Oceanography's researchers dive in and feed the sharks at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
completely different to visit while in town? Go to the Embarcadero and check out an old Soviet Submarine, a pirate ship, the historic Star of India ship, as well as the Museum itself which is located on the Berkeley, a ship of course!
Open daily from 8am - 8pm
Museum of Making Music (5790 Armada Drive, Carlsbad) - Another museum which incorporates interactive learning - what could be more appropriate than instruments? A sample of the special events scheduled at the Museum of Making Music:
The New Children's Museum of San Diego opened its doors to the public May 2008. After that, the Museum is open daily from 9am -- 4pm except Wednesdays when it is closed. The New Children's Museum is a place where kids are encouraged to touch everything--to think, play and create. The New Children's Museum is located at 200 W. Island Avenue. Parking is available on the street or at nearby Horton Plaza. Please note that the Museum has a designated indoor area where all visitors will be asked to park their strollers, so be prepared.
USS Midway/San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum (910 North Harbor Drive, Downtown) - We are so proud to have this amazing museum on our downtown waterfront. Nay sayers said that this historic ship would block the views of the water - nonsense. The aircraft carrier adds to the view and makes this grand old military ship truly accessible to the public. Let us add a few facts. The Midway is the longest-serving aircraft carrier in Navy history. It still holds the record for longest carrier deployment at sea at 327 days. The Midway repeatedly set new standards of naval aviation.
We are pleased to say that attendance and membership has exceeded the Museum's expectations and has accelerated their ability to bring more of the ship open for viewing. In fact, now it is regarded as the most-visited floating naval ship museum in the world. We are also very pleased that so many USS Midway 'alumni' have come back to visit their former home away from home. Open daily from 10am - 5pm
If you would like more information about the USS Midway, here is a book and a DVD you might want to check out.
