Where to Eat in Coronado
Local eateries as well as representatives from the national chains (Starbucks, Dairy Queen and Rubio's) are dotted throughout the island. Here are some of the local's favorites:
Swadee Thai (1001 C Avenue; 619-435-8110)- This is the ONLY Thai restaurant on Nado. It is located one block north of Orange on C Avenue. The restaurant and features inside/outside dining, and most importantly, great Thai food. The food is prepared by a woman chef and the food is served by women servers dressed in traditional Thai clothing. The quality of the food and the presentation is consistently good. This is a very nice casual restaurant that is very popular with the island locals. Beer and wine are available in addition to the Thai iced teas. You will not be disappointed.
Hours: Lunch/Dinner Monday-Saturday
The Brigantine and Miguel's (1333 and 1351 Orange Avenue) - This family of restaurants has quite a number of restaurants located throughout San Diego. The Brigantine and Miguel's restaurants in Coronado are conveniently located on Orange Avenue, just about a half block and across the street from the Del. It is located right next to the Hotel Cordova. The Brig features seafood and steaks and Miguel's features Mexican cuisine. Both restaurants feature happy hours that are very popular with the locals - appetizers and cocktails are marked down from 4pm-7pm. One of the best happy hour options to accompany your Brig Brew or your margarita are the fish tacos which only cost $2.50 each. They are large and delicious fish tacos that are a steal at that price. For some reason, the servers always ask if you want cheese. It does not cost extra, so go for it!
Coronado Brewing Company (170 Orange) - Ahhhh, a brewery! Coronado Brewing Company provides its ales to a number of restaurants on and off the islands. If you want to swill at the source, then this is the place for you. The restaurant has a nice covered patio that is much nicer than the dark interior. Pitchers and pints of their beer are available and the staff is always more than willing to let you sample their beer - just ask. Food options vary from the standard California pub fare of fries, nachos, and sandwiches to this Brewery's tasty calzones and pizza.
Nado Gelato Caffe (1017 C Avenue) - While there are other ice cream places located on Orange Avenue, most locals head over to this locally owned caffe to get their gelato fix. Nado Gelato is conveniently located just off Orange Avenue and about 2 doors down from Swadee Thai.
Coronado Ferry Landing
If you took the ferry to get to Coronado, then you saw what the Ferry Landing looks like. If you drove over the bridge, then it is located to the right of the bridge. Dining at this site ranges from hot dogs and gyros to fine dining at Il Fornaio (1201 First Street) and Peohe's (1333 First Street). We really like the atmosphere at Il Fornaio and amazingly there are only 2 locations in San Diego - the other one is in Del Mar. Both restaurants offer panoramic views of San Diego's skyline and bay.
Although Peohe's and Il Fornaio are very popular with the San Diego locals, we are not sure if they are as popular with the Coronado locals. One restaurant near the Ferry Landing Marketplace that is popular with the Coronado and San Diego locals alike is the delightful Tartine Café (1106 First Street). Coffee and freshly baked French pastries are served on a lovely outdoor café.
